Incheon International Airport, recently ranked as Asia's second-best airport, faced a significant service disruption starting at 4:30 a.m. due to instability in the ARINC global network. The outage affected 13 airlines across both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, leaving check-in systems paralyzed for several hours. This technical failure highlights the vulnerability of global aviation infrastructure to localized digital connectivity issues.
The disruption hit Chinese carriers hardest, including China Southern, China Eastern, and Air China. At the peak of the crisis, approximately 1,200 passengers were stranded at check-in counters, leading to massive queues and 35 flight delays. Airport authorities responded by deploying 50 additional staff members to manage the congestion and implement manual check-in procedures for those with imminent departures to mitigate the backlog.
Normal operations resumed around 5:20 p.m. after connectivity was restored. While the immediate technical problem is solved, the airport continues to monitor the situation to ensure no further impact on regional travel schedules. For international tourists planning trips through major Asian hubs like Incheon, staying informed about such systemic risks is essential for maintaining smooth travel itineraries to destinations like Vietnam.
