Japan changes tax-free shopping rules for foreign tourists

Tokyo Customs has set up special terminals and baggage-check areas at major transport hubs.

Shoppers have to link a refund method to their passport, such as a credit card, at the store counter.

When departing within 90 days, they can scan their passports at airport kiosks or use a QR code on the Visit Japan Web app available at Narita, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu, Fukuoka, New Chitose, and Naha airports, to get the refund.

While keeping paper receipts is not mandatory, Japan Customs says they can speed things up if officers ask to physically inspect goods.

Practical Tourist Tip

Book airport transfers and eSIM in advance for a smooth trip in Vietnam.
