Tan left home in Jiangsu Province last month, taking a train to Lhasa, capital of the Tibet Autonomous Region. After traveling more than 3,000 kilometers over 43 hours, he arrived in Tibet on Oct. 12, completing his goal of visiting all of China's provincial-level administrative divisions, according to The China Academy.
His journey drew attention on social media after another traveler encountered him at a restaurant in Lhasa and posted a video of him.
Tan had initially hoped to join an organized tour, but travel agencies declined his booking requests because of his age. Friends and family also advised him against going, citing the risk of altitude sickness.
He decided to travel independently and used AI to help prepare for the trip.
